What Sod Costs Depends on the Ground Under It

The sod is the least expensive part of a new lawn. What sets the price is what has to happen first: rough and finish grading, topsoil where the builder left clay, a sprinkler system designed for the shape of the lawn, and access to the site. On a tight new-build lot the difference between a truck that can reach the yard and one that cannot can be a full day of labor.

In a drought year we also talk about how much lawn you need. A homeowner who asks us for 7,000 square feet of sod often ends up with 3,000 square feet of well-irrigated lawn, drip-fed beds, and a lower water bill. We use a drought-tolerant blend and lay it on a system designed to water it deeply and rarely.

We install sod any time the ground is not frozen and water is available, which in our area usually means from secondary water turn-on in spring through the shutoff in fall. Sod laid the week before a district shuts off is a gamble we will talk you out of.
